With such a tough year in politics and social issues one positive thing we can say is 2016 was an incredible year for music. With releases from some of this generations biggest artist like Beyoncé, Kanye West, Drake , Rihanna, and Kendrick Lamar. There were far beyond enough honorable mentions but these were some albums and projects that really stuck out to us. Check it out below:
This was recommended to me to listen to and I’m glad I did Plug in. There’s not a single song worth skipping on A Good Night, each track is smooth and gives that West coast vibe, If you’re into that real west coat sound check out this album from a 24-year-old Oakland artist.
After doing an interview with @CashSintra last year, we kept up with his music and then he released this dope project. He is A different take to a “New York rapper ” with a unique sound. He creatively tells stories with his lyrics as well as visuals. This project was professionally put together with amazing quality.
With a colorful name, and colorful art work this album is filled purely with creativity and incredible sound topped off with gospel influence. Its filled with life. from songs like “Same Drugs’ to blessings the album is fire. With being an independent artist this project was incredibly planned, and produced.
Rhode Islands own Code Green had one of the dopest projects of the year because you can’t just put them in one category. All three bring a unique aspect to their sounds. Not to mention the creative and relatable vibe they give with their documentary that goes into the white masks they’re wearing.
This is a soulful, honest project brimming with west coast gospel influence. I heard about Anderson Paak after listening to Dr Dre’s Compton album. He’s a talented artist with a lyrical craft. Very effortless his R&B and hip hop sound flows through your ears.
After hearing Rodeo, we knew Travis Scott was an artist who was going to stick around. After hearing this album we could easily call him iconic, an extremely well put together body of work that features everyone from 21 Savage to Kendrick Lamar.
With two years in the making and becoming the first album steamed over a billion times, this seemed like a a great conversation piece this year, some good reviews some bad, but the Plug is going to give this album a dope two thumbs up because who doesn’t love some Drake classics ? With some amazing samples, and non stop fire tracks, Drake does it again.
Even though it was just released we can not deny this genuine feel to this album. Touching on major issues and also major emotions I can not deny this album made me cry at the least once. Cole drops this album just one week after announcing it and leaves everyone with some information never before shared, like his daughter and wife. He reflects on some true stories and deeply shows what a lot of people are dealing with and push through everyday.
After hearing Still Brazy, shocked I had to listen again. No only was the album continuous fire but it literally put me in the middle of Bompton. YG has always been a real creative rapper to me based on videos and movies I’ve seen that he’s written or directed but this album was a soulful gem. He touches on racism, police brutality, broke homies and more. He keeps you’re in his passenger seat as he takes you through a ride in his hood.
With such a revolutionary year, DJ Khaled monopolized the digital market and created one of the greatest marketing techniques possible with the use of snap chat. He used humor, motivation, and his incredible life style to showcase himself as a brand and creator of amazing music. He shows that with this album specifically. With features from the biggest artist out right now like Drake, Future, Nas, Big Sean Kendrick Lamar and more this album has hit after hit.
This album took us by such surprise this year, I’ m not even sure Solange could image the impact it would leave. This sultry soulful album was in a league of its own which is hard when you’re constantly being compared to your sister. Her voice and her style comes alive in every song on this album especially a personal favorite “Cranes in the Sky.”
By far Rihanna’s best album to date. With every album she recreates her sound and artsy to match. From amazing songs like ” Needed Me” which was everyone’s summer anthem to songs like ” Sex with Me.” In concert this was an amazing show, Rihanna puts her all into every song and every performance, She was suspended in air dancing above the audience for a period of time which kept the crowd in suspense.
Unreleased tracks are my favorite, this body of work features songs he’s preformed live but didn’t give a name to. It was so creative how Kendrick released these songs so simplistically with practically no art cover or song titles. It makes you that much more intrigued and appealed to hear it through.
In honorable Kanye West fashion, this album was released with lots of conversation and even more controversy. After constantly changing the title and track list, we’re just glad the songs didn’t change. The entire album is a great body of work, it was not old Kanye but a new Kanye we’ve grown to resonate with. One thing that is undeniable is the opportunities this album has created for some of the artist featured, from Chance the Rapper to Designer. Simple artwork with one complex track after track makes this album stand out for us .This concert was unforgettable, he took the music away from making it about the artist, levitated his stage above the crowd and created a mosh pit of good vibes.
An incredible body work that was innovative, revolutionary and creative to say the least. including everything from Soulja boy quotes to country music vibes. With the combination of the visuals for each song this album was amazing. I went to this concert in June and must say I never had a better experience at a concert aside from Beyonce and Jay-Z’s On the Run Tour last year. With fireworks, non stop dancing, suspense and incredible videos playing behind this amazing artist. It was one for the books especially with her finale performance with a causal walk on water inspired dance… No big deal lol.
